Thriving green spaces define the character of academic institutions and provide numerous environmental benefits, such as shade on long walks to class on a hot summer day, and the cleaning of air pollutants like carbon dioxide. Trees are also essential to many campus’ sustainability initiatives. Unfortunately, trees and the environmental benefits they provide can be overlooked.
The urban environment presents extremely harsh growing conditions. Trees on many campuses struggle to survive due to limited root space, compacted soil, and adverse environmental conditions. In a weakened state, trees are susceptible to insect infestation and disease; without help, they will decline and die prematurely.
